Panorama of London 1543 (1)

Panorama of London 1543 (1)

Regular price £39.95

Section 1 From the sixteenth century and one of the earliest maps in our London city collection and the first part of a trio. Although it would appear more of a picture, the drawing fell into the category of maps at the time it was published and the intrinsic detail used by Wyngaerde is brilliantly precise offering the benefit of many architectural details that could not be included in a standard bird’s eye view. The designer himself is not well known. Born in Belgium, Wyngaerde came to England to further his career. This initial section focuses on the extreme west of the city where we see the Abbey, very much similar to how it is at present and, where the Houses of Parliament now stand today, on the map we see the King’s Palace of Westminster.
