A fine example of James Reynold’s work. It covers the centre of the great UK capital from the infamous Notting Hill to the Isle of Dogs, and from Kentish Town to Battersea Park. Its detail is spellbinding, showing every street, park, bridge, monument, train station and much more, as well as notable tourist destinations such as Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and the British Museum (highlighted in red). Reynolds further depicts a proposed embankment along the northern shore of the Thames from Blackfriars Bridge to Westminster Bridge – this eventually became the Victoria Embankment, constructed between 1865 and 1870, a novelty given that work on the embankment did not begin until three years after this map was printed.
